In July 2008, Sempra Energy unveiled a new work of public art at its corporate headquarters
with the permanent installation of Road to Sempra, a 10 x 6 foot back-lit
photo mosaic designed and built by Duka Media.
Sempra's spacious lobby was blessed with a framed space designed and built by the architect but which had remained unfilled since the building was built in the 1960s. The creation of the large installation began with an original photograph which was recreated using nearly 7,000 unique tiles of Sempra employee portraits. Tiles were organized into color groups and then used to rebuild the photo. The wide range of photography available made it possible to achieve the natural color gamut with very little tinting. To create the Duratrans, the finished design was printed on a lightweight synthetic semi-transparent material, almost like a slide which was then stretched to fit into a light box custom designed and built to fit the existing frame.
